boriginal activist born on June 16th, 1936 behind the Old Telegraph Station at Alice Springs.
As a young man he was a keen soccer player, playing for Port Adelaide for nearly 15 years.
Perkins is a founder of the Australian Aboriginal Cricket Association.
In 1965 he led a bus tour of outback settlements which exposed the shocking treatment of the indigenous population.
Later in 1981 he was made head of the Department of Aboriginal Affairs, the first Aborigine to become a permanent head of a federal government department.
Perkins is a member of the Olympic Indigenous Advisory Board.
Charles Perkins is now a spokesman for Aboriginal causes. His strategy is to tell the world that Australia has a huge skeleton in its cupboard.
His daughter Rachel directed the award-winning film Radiance.
