David Scott Mitchell was the son of an army surgeon.David Scott Mitchell

When he was rejected by a judge's daughter he found solace in books. With a considerable inheritance from his father he began collecting books.

When by 1898 his collection had grown to 61,000 items, the ailing Mitchell promised to bequeath his collection to the State if the Government would build a library to house it. Thus we have the Mitchell Library in Sydney.

The foundation stone was laid in 1906. Mitchell was too ill to attend but did donate 70,000 for the purchase of books and documents.
