Herbert Hollingsworth
Australia Crest

Herbert turned 101 years young on April 14th, 1999.

Herbert was born in Aberdeen in the Hunter Valley and fled aged 12 when his parents succumbed to tuberculosis. He worked on the land until war broke out then left to sign up for duty with the 7th and later the 12th Light Horse. He was born as Bowden but took his mother's maiden name and put his age up as he was too young to join up.

He did not ride in the famous 3 mile charge at Beersheba on 31st October, 1917, but was part of the reinforcements to the Light Horse. Earlier in the war he had served at Gallipoli, clearing the dead and their belongings.

Herbert is one of these people, God willing, who will have lived in 3 centuries, the 19th, 20th and 21st.
