ontroversial painting by US painter Jackson Pollock bought by the Gough Whitlam government in 1973 for a record $1.3 million. Most people thought - "I could have done better".
The painting is now back in the National Gallery after spending a year on tour overseas. It is now valued at some $40 million. This would appear to be the only one Gough got right. Gough said "To get a great crowd vindicating one in such numbers is quite embarrassing".
