Artistic genius who was born in Sydney on April 7th, 1939.

Brett held his first painting exhibition in 1959.

He studied in Europe from scholarships he had won and exhibited his work there and in U.S.A.

In 1964 he released a series of paintings entitled Christie in London, based on mass-murderer John Christie.

Whiteley won the Archibald Prize in 1976 with a self portrait and he won again in 1978 with Life, Art and the Other Thing.

He also won the Wynne Prize for landscape on three occasions - 1977 with The Jacaranda Tree, 1978 with Summer at Carcoar and 1984 with South Coast After Rain.

In 1978 he won the 3 major art prizes - the Archibald, Wynne and Sulman.

Brett died in 1992 on the South Coast of NSW from a lethal cocktail of drugs and booze.
