ARTS (Painting & Sculpt)

John Glover
Australia Crest

English painter who made his mark in the Old Dart before moving to Tasmania in the 1830s, to a farm some 30 km north of Hobart.

His most famous painting is Bath Of Diana, an idyllic painting of Aborigines at a swimming hole framed by elegant eucalypts. The 1837 painting was bought for almost $1 million in 1994 when the Federal Government refused it an export licence. It hangs in the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra.

Recently, the scene of the painting has been identified by the distinctive rock in the water and a rocky outcrop in the bank of the river.
