Young Reg worked in the family knitting mill before starting his own road transport business.
Ansett founded the forerunner to Ansett Airlines of Australia in 1936 after restrictions were legislated adverse to road transport. Ansett had gained his pilot's licence in 1929 and started up an air service from Hamilton to Melbourne.
In 1937 he won an air race from Brisbane to Adelaide.
In 1946 the business became Ansett Transport Industries and invested in car rental and television stations.
There was an open feud between Reg and his son Bob when Bob set up Budget Rent-A-Car in competition to his father's Avis.
Sir Reginald died in 1981.
