Captain Thunderbolt
Australia Crest

Frederick Ward was born at Wilberforce near Windsor, NSW, in 1836.

Being a superb horseman he easily drifted into horse thieving and was eventually caught by the law. He was sentenced to seven years jail on Cockatoo Island in Sydney Harbour.

As a bushranger he roamed the New England district, robbing properties, hotels and 'bailing up' travellers. He carried out the hold-up on the mail coach at Split Rock near Uralla, NSW.

He was liked by those who knew him and his name was soon romanticised to 'Captain Thunderbolt'.

Ward was shot dead by Constable Walker in May 1870 and is buried in Uralla.
