Australia Crest

Capital of the Northern Territory, named for the English naturalist Charles Darwin. Darwin was formerly named Palmerston from 1869 - 1911.

On 5th February, 1869, South Australia's Surveyor-General, George Woodroffe Goyder, arrived at the port of Darwin (Palmerston) to establish a settlement.

In February, 1942, the Japanese air force bombed the city. Over 240 Australians lost their lives in the raids. In all there were 64 raids on the city.

The city was destroyed by Cyclone Tracy on Christmas Day, 1974, but has been since rebuilt on the same site.

The first boat people from Vietnem arrived in Darwin on 28th February, 1976.

Refugee status was later granted to many illegal immigrants.
