COLONIAL

John Hunter
Australia Crest

Captain Hunter was the 2nd Governor of the colony of NSW, in 1795 succeeding Arthur Phillip and the caretaker Major Francis Grose.

Under Hunter, the fledgling colony expanded, livestock numbers increased and the first Merino sheep were imported by John Macarthur. Also, the first export from the colony, coal to Bengal, took place in 1799.

Hunter was recalled to Britain in 1800, mainly due to military influence.

The Hunter Valley is named for him.
