On February 10th, 1964, the destroyer HMAS Voyager sunk after being sliced in two by the aircraft carrier Melbourne in a collision off Jervis Bay. 82 sailors were killed in the disaster.

In 1969 the U.S. destroyer Frank E. Evans collided with the Melbourne in the South China Sea. 74 American sailors were killed.
