Swiss Canyoning Disaster
Australia Crest

On July 27th, 1999, a torrent of water claimed the lives of 13 young Australians as they were having fun in the rapids of a river near Interlaken, Switzerland.

Amongst the dead was 31 year old John Flynn, a young airforce-man from Sale, Victoria, who had helped in the rescue of yachtsmen in the disaster of the Sydney to Hobart yacht race of December, 1998.

Prime Minister John Howard said "This is probably the worst tragedy ever to occur overseas and affect young Australians outside the theatre of war".

Governor-General, Sir William Deane, attended a memorial service in Interlaken early August, 99. He and the bereaved families cast sprigs of wattle to the waters which had taken their loved ones.
