Award winning author who won the 1999 Miles Franklin for his novel Eucalyptus. The 58 year old won $28,000 for the story which was 12 years in the making.

Eucalyptus tells the story of father and daughter, Holland and Ellen, who live on a property in New South Wales.

Previous winners of the Miles Franklin include Thea Astley in 1962, 1965, 1972, Peter Carey in 1981, 1989, 1998, Thomas Keneally in 1967, 1968 and Helen Demidenko in 1995.

Eucalyptus, his third novel, also won the Sydney based writer the Commonwealth Writers' prize in April, 1999.
