Thomas Keneally

Author born in Sydney on 7th October, 1935.

Keneally studied the priesthood before turning to teaching and then writing.

His novels include A Dutiful Daughter and in 1982 he won the prestigious Booker Prize for Schindler's Ark which was later turned into the Oscar winning movie Schindler's List by Steven Spielberg.

The book is considered one of the best 200 novels written since 1950, as deemed by Carmen Callil and Colm Toibin. Callil founded The Virago Press in 1972. She also chaired the 1996 Judges of the Booker Prize.

In 1991 he was appointed the Australian Republican Movement's first chairman.

An avid Manly fan, Keneally is the new face of promoting rugby league in 1999, replacing last year's I Get Knocked Down campaign and previously Jimmy Barnes and Tina Turner with "You're Only The Best"

These immortal words were written by Keneally whilst travelling on a train through Wigan in the heartland of rugby league in the north of England.

Thomas is a strong advocate of a Republican Australia.
