William McBride
Australia Crest

Gynaecologist who discovered the horrors of Thalidomide way back in 1961. Over 12,000 babies, worldwide, were born without limbs and other severe deformities.

In 1987 some doubts arose about his findings into a morning sickness drug. A medical tribunal found he had falsified scientific research and he was deregistered in 1993.

He continued working for the organisation he had founded, Foundation 41, conducting research into DNA and genetics.

McBride, now 71, also spent a year working in Samoa before returning to reinstatement in Sydney.

Happily, he is back in work in Sydney's northern beaches, specialising in fertility issues.
