Edward Hammond Hargraves
Australia Crest

On 12th February, 1851, Hargraves discovered gold at Summerhill Creek, Ophir near Bathurst, NSW, thus triggering the Australian gold rush.

With his partners John Lister and William Tom they announced the first viable goldfield in Australia.

In May 99, the gold to make the Sydney 2000 Olympic and Paralympic gold medals was handed over to ceremonies director Ric Birch and Paralympian chief executive Lois Appleby by the Ophir Gold 2000 Committee.
