Neville Bonner AO was in 1971 the first Aboriginal voted into Federal Parliament in Australia and stayed there until 1983.
Neville was an elected delegate at the Constitutional Convention in Canberra in February, 1998, standing for No Republic - ACM.
Neville Bonner died on 5th February, 1999, aged 76, after a battle with lung cancer. His funeral was attended by more than 1,000 mourners including Prime Minister John Howard, former PM Malcolm Fraser and former governor-general Bill Hayden. The aboriginal community mourning party was led by former chief of the then Aboriginal Affairs Department, Charles Perkins.
His resolute independence of thought was his contribution to genuinely reconciling Aboriginals with other Australians, despite their different backgrounds.
