Sir John Gorton
Australia Crest

Long-serving senator and Liberal prime Minister from 1968 to 1971.

John Gorton was born in Melbourne on 9th September, 1911 and educated at Geelong Grammar and Oxford.

He joined the RAAF as a fighter pilot in 1940 and was severely wounded.

Gorton was displaced in a party room coup in March, 1971 by Billy McMahon and stepped down from parliament in November, 1975.

A decade after his first wife's death he remarried twice-widowed Nancy Horne, whom he had known for 30 years.
