Born in Perth on 25th February, 1938, Elliott was one of the world's greatest middle distance runners, if not the best.

On 6th August, 1958 he set the world record of 3 mins 54.5secs for the mile and broke the 1500 metres world record the same year.

At the 1958 Commonwealth Games in Cardiff, Wales, he won gold in the 880 yds and the mile.

At the Olympic Games in Rome in 1960, Herb won the gold medal in the 1500 metres.

He only ever lost one race over 1500 metres or the mile and during his career he broke the four-minute mile on 17 occasions.

Elliott retired from athletics in May, 1961 and is currently working with SOCOG towards the Olympic Games in Sydney, 2000.

Elliott lives in the leafy Sydney harbourside suburb of Neutral Bay.
