hampion Sprinter from Narromine, a citrus growing area in the central west of NSW.
Melinda is on the comeback trail after falling just short of the line in Kuala Lumpur in September, 1998, when about to win her 3rd Commonwealth Games gold medal. She is preparing herself for the World Championships in Seville, Spain, in August '99.
Melinda has been plagued by injury throughout her career and her mother has battled with cancer and lymphoma over the years. On hearing good news about her mother, Melinda powered home with the 200m gold in the Barcelona world indoor championships in March, 1995. She became the first Australian sprinter to win a world title in more than 30 years.
She competed at the Olympic Games in Barcelona and Atlanta but perhaps her chance for Gold will come in Sydney 2000.
Melinda lives at Balgowlah near Manly with hubby Mark Taylor, a salesman. No doubt Melinda looks on her husband as being Australian Of TheYear, but that's another Mark Taylor.
Melinda is sponsored by Optus.
