STRINE

The Black Stump
Australia Crest

In 1826 land beyond Coolah in the northwest of NSW was named Black Stump Run (the aborigines called it "the place where the fire went out") and beyond this point lay utter desolation.

Governor Darling declared it the boundary beyond which no land in the colony could be sold.

In 1850, the Black Stump Staging post was built on the road to Gunnedah, 10 km north of Coolah. This Post burnt down in 1910.

Nowadays the term means some mythical point far way, akin to Woop Woop, e.g. 'it's the other side of the Black Stump'.
