On 23rd September, 1993, Juan Antonio Samaranch announced in Monte Carlo that Sydney would be the venue for the year 2000 Olympic Games, the city winning the bid against competition like Beijing and Manchester.

Premier of NSW, John Fahey and Rod McGeoch rose from their seats as one and embraced each other.

Thousands of people celebrated the news with fireworks and much merriment around Circular Quay, The Sydney Opera House and The Rocks through the rest of the night until dawn arose.
