Elizabeth won the Community Service Award as part of the 1999 Young Australian of the Year Awards.

Aged 21, she grew up in the care of others and pledged to help others in the same situation. She hopes to help young people take control of their lives and not be victims.

She is State co-ordinator for the Queensland branch of Young People in Care.

In 1998 she wrote a book about her own traumatic childhood called Every Childhood Lasts A Lifetime.

She said "This is a bit of a miracle. I hope it proves that you can come from the care system and make it."
