YOUNG ACHIEVERS

Priya Cooper
Australia Crest

Priya won the Sports Award as part of the 1999 Young Australian of the Year Awards.

Aged 24 from Western Australia, Priya has won 8 gold medals at the Paralympics, never once dreaming that one day she would be considered the country's outstanding young athlete.

Born with cerebral palsy she has competed at two Paralympic Games and become one of Australia's best swimmers in a decade.

Priya did not expect to win the award as she was competing against tennis great Patrick Rafter and swim sensation Ian Thorpe. But win she did!

She said she was proud to have been selected to represent the youth of Australia.
